a quick roll-in-the-hay with art history

so this is week two with no access to a scanner...i thought i could fake it for awhile, but i suppose i should just admit it. on the plus side, i recently started reading "the art spirit" by robert henri. i've been schlepping this book around for about ten years and never bothered to read it. i guess i always associated henri with his hyper-masculine realist painting of boxers and didn't really get the appeal. so imagine my chagrin when, on a whim, i opened up the book and read this gem on the dang over-leaf:

"there are moments in our lives, there are moments in a day, when we seem to see beyond the usual. such are the moments of our greatest wisdom. if one could but recall his vision by some sort of sign. it was in this hope that the arts were invented. sign-posts on the way to what may be. sign-posts toward greater knowledge."

wow. so then i looked up some of his artwork, and found that that the boxers were rather an exception to his thematic style rather than the norm. let's just say there are a lot of pretty ladies without clothes on.

birds of a feather

some words of wisdom from an icon..."Grouches don’t like to be happy. If I’m happy I’m miserable—but I love to be miserable. So that makes me happy. But I don’t like being happy. So that makes me miserable. But I love being miserable, so that makes me happy, but I don’t like to be happy, so I get—you know, I’m a mess."
